The Sinhala language is the native language of the Sinhalese people of Sri Lanka. It is one of the official languages of the country, alongside Tamil. Sinhala belongs to the Indo-Aryan branch of the Indo-European language family and shares linguistic similarities with other languages of the Indian subcontinent, particularly with Indo-Aryan languages such as Bengali and Hindi.
